No Longer Adrift Print
Created circa 2014.
I created No Longer Adrift after I had learned how Africans were transported on ships across the ocean – shoulder to shoulder and stacked on top of each other while shackled. I know the stories of how some would jump overboard or even be thrown overboard to die at sea. So I thought," what if I could give them a life raft?" What if I could've saved a few?
I painted them as they would be transported to educate, however, like those in A Slave Girl's Journey, I couldn't bring myself to put the chains on their shackles. In this painting, their "life raft" has washed up on shore, and they're finally free.
