Frida is one of my painting idols. I remember seeing some of her pieces and thinking how morbid they could be. But knowing her paintings is to know her and her life.
The significance of the Mictlantecuhtli artifact means that she has transcended death. Some of her paintings depicted the ever-imminent death. Here, she wears the artifact as an accessory, to not only signify that she has become more than death, but also that Mictlantecuhtli is forever with her.
This piece means the world to me. In fact, I refused to paint her until I felt my skills had improved enough to do the piece justice.
