Selena was originally a commissioned piece. The brief was a portrait of Selena that incorporated cobalt blue. The cobalt blue was very reminiscent of Tejano colors. I used the same red that can be found in her lipstick because it was a beautiful, rich, deep, red. The squiggly stripe across her face is meat to represent the frill of the Tejano dresses when the women are dancing. It casts a highlight across her face because it is a part of who Selena was, as the Queen of Tejano music.
